Prostate is a small gland located under the bladder, and is a part of male reproductive system. It is responsible for secreting the alkaline fluid that nourishes sperm. It also encircles urethra, a tube carrying urine from the bladder to penis, and any problem in prostate gland can cause problems related to urination.
There are many type of problems associated with prostate gland, and some of the most common are Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer and prostatitis.
Prostate Gland Treatment
Prostate cancer is malignant tumor in prostate gland, and if left untreated at the early stage, can spread to the other organs through lymph fluid and blood. Prostate cancer grows very slowly, and is more common in older men.
Prostate gland treatment for cancer is usually based on patient’s age, grade of cancer, and the stage. There are mainly two options: surgery and radiation therapy to choose from.
If there is no cancer, Transurethral resection of prostate (TURP), open prostatectomy and laser prostatectomy are the three most common procedures to remove the prostate gland. TURP is a prostate gland treatment done under general or spinal anesthesia, and involves inserting a tube like instrument through urethra into penis, and up the prostate gland. Through this instrument, a special cutting instrument is inserted that removes the gland piece by piece. Transurethral Needle Ablation (Tuna) is the prostate gland treatment that is minimally invasive for enlarged prostate, and is done under sedation or local anesthesia. Camera is used to see the prostate, and needles are passed into the area. Ultrasound heats prostate tissues, and over the time of 2-12 weeks, the heated tissues shrink.

Open prostatectomy is another surgical prostate gland treatment, and is done by making an incision in the lower abdomen, between penis and umbilicus, and prostate gland is removed through this incision.
There are many herbal prostate gland treatments that can alleviate urinary symptoms. If the gland is quite large, the size can be reduced by using external beam radiotherapy. Seeding is also a form of prostate gland treatment that involves implanting the radioactive seeds inside the gland.
The prostate gland treatment must be chosen as per the symptoms, age, general health and severity of the problem. It is also a good idea to make some lifestyle changes and wait for a while before opting for any kind of prostate gland treatment. Sometimes, prescribed antibiotic medications can also solve the prostate problems. Opt for the more radical treatments only if the symptoms of prostate gland start interfering with the daily functions.
